Every year, as December arrives, cities glow with lights and millions reflect on the life of Jesus. But what often surprises people—especially in the West—is that Muslims share a deep love and reverence for Jesus (Isa عليه السلام).

In fact, believing in him is not optional in Islam; it is an essential pillar of faith. Many are shocked when they hear a Muslim say: “I cannot be a Muslim unless I believe in Jesus.”

This article explores who Jesus is in Islam, how his story is told in the Qur’an, and why his life continues to inspire millions.

1. Mary (Maryam): The Most Honored Woman

Before speaking about Jesus, Islam first introduces his mother, Maryam. She is the only woman mentioned by name in the entire Qur’an, with a whole chapter (Surah Maryam) named after her.

“Behold! The angels said: ‘O Mary! Allah has chosen you and purified you—chosen you above the women of all nations.’”
— (Qur’an 3:42)

2. The Birth & Miracles

Islam affirms the virgin birth with absolute clarity. The Qur’an describes Mary giving birth alone, under a palm tree. In her pain and fear, Allah provided a stream of water and fresh dates to comfort her.

When she returned to her people with the baby, they accused her of immorality. She pointed to the child. In one of the most astonishing miracles, the infant Jesus spoke:

“Indeed, I am the servant of Allah. He has given me the Scripture and made me a prophet.”
— (Qur’an 19:30)

Did You Know?
In Islam, Jesus performed miracles—healing the blind, raising the dead—not because he was divine, but "by Allah's permission." This phrase is key—it emphasizes that the power always belongs to the Creator.

3. The Crucial Difference: Prophet, Not God

This is where Islamic belief differs respectfully from Christian theology. Islam teaches strict Monotheism (Tawheed).

Concept Christian View Islamic View
Virgin Birth Believed Believed
Nature Son of God / Divine Prophet & Messiah
Crucifixion Died on Cross Raised up by God (Not killed)

4. The Ascension and Second Coming

Muslims believe Jesus was not crucified but was raised alive to the heavens. He will return near the end of time to defeat the false messiah (Dajjal) and unite humanity under the worship of the One God.
